Community policing

Community policing, or community-oriented policing (COP), is a strategy of policing that focuses on building ties and working closely with members of the communities. The main idea is to allow police to feel like the public can trust them.

Finland: Community policing is a part of basic police operations that maintain close relations with citizens efficiently and with quality. Its purpose is to uphold security and the public’s sense of security, to reduce and prevent offenses and disturbances and thereby to maintain the positive public image and high level of trust attained by the police.

What happened when a city disbanded its police force?

Camden, New Jersey, created a brand new police force to forge better ties with its residents. Their aim was for the police to be guardians, not warriors of their community. The city used to have one of the highest crime rates in the United States but now, eight years later, it is seeing its lowest crime rate in 50 years.
